After 2 months of extensive Physical and Occupational therapies Selmer was able to return home were he lives independently. Upon discharge Mr. Heller was able to walk 10 minutes without assistance, bicycle for 20 minutes, and lift 15-20 pounds. ImageLorna Kellams underwent surgery at St Vincent Carmel and was then admitted to Riverwalk Village for short term sub acute – rehabilitation to home - therapy. She needed rehabilitation from an abdominal surgery that resulted in a significant decrease in her mobility.

Mrs. Kellams was evaluated upon admission by therapy and noted that she had very little strength, endurance, and balance. This resulted in a decline in her activities of daily living and mobility. She was able to receive same day therapy and thus began her road to recovery.

While at Riverwalk Village she worked with the physical and occupational therapists, Chris and Kristin. They said "Mrs. Kellams gave it her all in therapy. She knew that 100% participation meant she would be back on her feet again and home in no time."

Mrs. Kellams was able to return home to her independent apartment - less than 3 weeks after arriving at Riverwalk Village! The Social Services team also helped her and her family set up the services she needed to be successful at home, including ensuring that a home health agency was there her first day back.

Good Job Mrs. Kellams! Your friends at Riverwalk Village will miss you!
ImageBefore moving to Riverwalk Village Mency lived alone in an apartment in New Castle. She had fallen while alone and struggled to get to the phone to call 911. After returning home Mency realized that she was unable to care for herself anymore and decided to move to Riverwalk Village.

When asked what she enjoys the most about living at Riverwalk Village, Mency said "If I still lived at home I wouldn’t have anyone to talk to and I would be alone. I like being able to help other residents when they are in need." Mency also enjoys the fact that she can attend bingo and church services without having to go out in the cold, rain or summer heat! She attends therapy 4 days a week and says she is very thankful for her therapists for being such good friends while also giving her the exercise she needs to keep her strong and healthy.

When asked if she would recommend Riverwalk Village to others Mency replied, "Oh yes! It has everything you need and you’re never lonely. The staff is so nice and caring." She also likes the fact that she doesn’t have to do any cleaning! "There is always someone in my room making sure everything is clean and I don’t have to do a thing" Mency said. In the winter you can find Mency bundled up and in the summer she’ll be outside with her sleeves and pant legs rolled up and she’ll tell you "I’m working on my tan!"

Mency is one of the many residents who call Riverwalk Village home. If you or anyone you know could benefit from the services at Riverwalk Village, call today for more information.
ImageJune Doub admitted to Riverwalk Village needing rehabilitation from a stroke that resulted in a decreased endurance. Prior to Riverwalk Village, she was a patient of the Riverview Transitional Care Unit.

Upon admission, Mrs. Doub had very little strength, endurance, and balance - as well as arthritis pain. While at Riverwalk Village she worked with the physical and occupational therapists. She had read about the dedicated and licensed therapists of Riverwalk and liked that they were able to make a personal connection with each resident because they were employed by Riverwalk and are not contracted employees.

With her hard work and determination, Mrs. Doub was able to return to her independent apartment after two months in the Riverwalk Moving Forward Rehabilitation program. June was anxious to get back to the two things she enjoys most - playing golf and playing the piano.

Nate and Kristin, two of her therapists said "June made significant progress over her entire stay. She was a pleasure to have in therapy everyday. We will really miss her"
ImageEvelyn Jones came to Riverwalk Village needing rehabilitation from a left ankle fracture. Upon admission from St. Vincent’s Hostpital Carmel, Mrs. Jones was very limited in all mobility areas, secondary to an air cast and requiring a wheelchair. Mrs. Jones needed assistance with all self-care, was fearful of falling, and was unable to express herself consistently due to short-term memory deficits. While at Riverwalk Village, Evelyn participated in Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapies. With hard work and determination, Mrs. Jones was able to walk throughout the facility with a rolling walker with increased strength and balance. She is also independent with self-care and expressing her feelings, wants and needs. Her therapist said, "Evelyn made significant progress over her entire stay. She was a pleasure to have in therapy everyday." Mrs. Jones was discharged home with her daughter and is doing great! Congratulations Mrs. Jones!

ImageHazel Davis came to Riverwalk Village needing rehabilitation after undergoing 2 heart procedures. Upon admission from The Indiana Heart Hospital, Mrs. Davis required supplemental oxygen and was only able to walk 25 feet before becoming short of breath.

While at Riverwalk Village she participated in Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapies. During therapy, Hazel was able to reduce her dependence on supplemental oxygen to increase her strength and endurance. Because of her hard work and dedication she was able to discharge home independently on without the need of oxygen and the ability to walk 500 feet indoors and outdoors.

Hazel is happy she was able to return home so she can go back to work where she rides on school buses for special needs children. Her therapists said, "Hazel's motivation and willingness to work hard allowed her to overcome obstacles and return home independently."
Congratulations Mrs. Davis!
My mother was a resident at Riverwalk Commons prior to admission to the Riverwalk Village. The staff (nurses' aids, physical therapist, housekeeping) everyone is so helpful. It is very comforting to know that my mother is being helped by caring staff members.

My mother has been a resident at Riverwalk Village for three years. The staff at Riverwalk has done a good job providing the care she needs. The staff at Riverwalk Village is very caring and they obviously love what they do.

I was aftraid to give the care of my mom to strangers, but all the ladies that I have talked to have been very good with my mom. She has adjusted very well to being there and that has given me peace of mind.
Thank you very much!
Image Evagene first came to us from the hospital due to an excessively bad bout of emphysema. Although Evagene has suffered from emphysema for approximately 7 years, this has been her first stay in a skilled nursing facility. Upon arriving at Riverwalk Village, Evagene was assessed by our physical, occupational, and speech therapists. Evagene was found to have a very poor level of endurance and strength; she could tolerate standing for only a few minutes at a time and needed multiple rest breaks. Evagene's appointed therapists for physical therapy, Jill and occupational therapist, Tammy, set up a personalized rehabilitation program in order to focus on these particular goals. Jill and Tammy both state, "Evagene was always highly motivated and eager to attend therapy".

Within 5 weeks, Evagene has increased her standing to 15+ minutes. Evagene is also maintaining her own oxygen saturations and walking independently for 500-700 feet while transporting her oxygen tank. Evagene's favorite day of therapy was her 'Cooking Day'. In order to ensure that Evagene would be able to cook for herself once back at home, she independently made lunch in our therapy gym. "I didn't think I could do it", said Evagene, but her therapists encouraged the activity and Evagene made a wonderful lunch consisting of pork chops, macaroni and cheese, green beans, and brownies.

Although Evagene has graduated from our Moving Forward Rehabilitation program, she still plans on visiting once a week to keep up with her therapy and also to catch up with the many friends she has made here.

"I can't thank my therapists enough for what they have done for me."
- Evagene Bradfield.
ImageMargie was admitted to Riverwalk Village after suffering a stroke along with a compression fracture while living alone at home. She was unable to use the right side of her body and could not swallow properly.

Margie was assessed by Riverwalk Village’s Moving Forward Rehabilitation team to develop an effective way for her to attain her goal. Upon admission, Margie was dependant on others for all activities and found it difficult to ambulate. The on-site Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapists worked with Margie and her personal physician to develop a treatment plan. After Margie could see positive changes, she became increasingly motivated and eventually started asking for extra activities to do! Margie now spends 15 to 20 minutes on the recumbent bicycle and recently baked the therapy team a cake! She has developed many friendships with the Riverwalk Village staff.

Margie’s son, Lonnie, agrees that the therapy team has been "magnificent", but he also stressed that the entire facility is "wonderful with communication".

Margie is now fully independent with all of her daily living activities. She uses a walker and is comfortable walking outside and using stairs. Although Margie enjoys therapy and does not want to leave, she does plan to move to an Assisted Living Apartment at Riverwalk Commons, a sister community, where she will live a more independent life.
