Rosewalk Village of Lafayette Success Print E-mail
Image"It felt like home when I walked in! They didn’t even know me, and they were waving and talking to me! I came just to look and I fell in love!" This was Maxine Cross’ first impression when she visited Rosewalk Village of Lafayette before undergoing two knee replacements. Her physician recommended she tour several rehabilitation facilities before making a decision, but Maxine fell in love with Rosewalk Village of Lafayette right away! Prior to her knee replacements, she was in a lot pain and medication didn’t help. Maxine fell often and it overwhelmed her. As a result, she did not move around much in her house, and she became very reclusive. Through short-term rehabilitation at Rosewalk Village of Lafayette, Maxine has made significant strides in her mobility and strength!

After her knee replacement surgeries, Maxine moved into a private suite at Rosewalk Village of Lafayette, and immediately began Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy. She gradually worked to increase her strength; the therapy team never pushed her too hard when she felt discomfort. Maxine’s favorite activity in therapy was using the Omnicyle, a machine that allowed her to strengthen her legs and arms from the comfort of her wheelchair. The day Maxine reached her goal of walking up and down stairs was an eventful day, because this was necessary for her to return to her two-story home. She enjoyed other activities in therapy too, like making brownies, playing cards, and washing dishes- -— all meaningful activities that prepared her for her return home.

When Maxine first arrived, she said, "I was down in the dumps. I wanted to hide from people." A turning point for Maxine was when her nurse took the time to listen to what was bothering her. Maxine beamed, "My nurse was wonderful! She was eager to help me, and when I was down, she would come in my room to make me laugh!"

Outside of therapy, Maxine kept busy participating in the many daily activities Rosewalk Village of Lafayette offered, such as getting her nails done and listening to guest entertainers play the piano. Maxine says, "There was so much going on that I didn’t even turn on my TV. I spend my time talking with the staff and other residents!"

Maxine has made extraordinary progress and she is looking forward to returning home to take care of her dog, Kayla, to go shopping at the mall, and attend her grandson’s golf tournaments. She plans to get out of her home two to three times a week, which is a goal the therapy team at Rosewalk Village of Lafayette helped her set! One of those outings is already planned, because Maxine wants to visit friends at Rosewalk Village of Lafayette once a month. Maxine’s advice for anyone in need of short-term rehabilitation is, "Before you think of going anywhere else, go see Rosewalk Village of Lafayette first! To be frank, I would live here the rest of my life!"
ImageMildred "Poody" Buckles had a stroke that left her unable to swallow even small bits of food or water. She was given a feeding tube, and when traditional speech therapy was failing, her family began looking for alternate forms of treatment. That is they decided to try bringing her to Rosewalk Village for VitalStim Therapy, a form of treatment that, simply put, uses electrodes to stimulate the affected muscles.

Just after her admission to Rosewalk Village of Lafayette, Mildred returned back to home and we received this letter from her daughter, Pat.

Dear Mr. Ramsey:
I am writing today to share with you what I consider an extraordinary accomplishment, some credit for which goes to one of your therapists, Nichole Frank.

On Thanksgiving Day, my 85 year old mother, Mildred Buckles, at a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Nothing extraordinary about that, unless you also know that in September, she suffered a stroke that affected her swallow function, and left her totally unable to swallow, even her own saliva in the beginning days following the stroke.

At the end of the 4th week of traditional therapy, my siblings and I began to consider that the swallow exercises were not helping her make progress. I could tell by the way she was acting that Mom was feeling that she would "never get better". Fortunately for my mom, it was at that point we discovered VitalStim Therapy and transferred her to Rosewalk Village of Lafayette where she began having treatments.

Nichole Frank is AWESOME. I had the pleasure of being present while my mother received VitalStim Therapy on 3 occasions, and observed that Nichole has the perfect combination of perseverance and kindness to help her patients make as much progress as possible. My mother is a terrific patient, but I want you to know that Nichole’s commitment to this therapy, her ability to clearly communicate with my mother, and her encouragement along the way all contributed to my mom’s recovery.

Today, my mother left Rosewalk Village of Lafayette to return home. She has regained the quality of life that we all want for our parents in their later years. My entire family is passionately convinced that without VitalStim therapy, we would not have our mother at home today…perhaps never again.
ImageLeonora Wiggins has always been incredibly active and is also immensely talented! Ceramics, quilting, oil painting, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, Red Hat Society member – these are just a few of her hobbies! Leonora had one knee replaced successfully several years ago, so when the other one started slowing her down, she decided to have another surgery.

Leonora selected Rosewalk Village of Lafayette for short-term physical and occupational therapy after her knee replacement. Based on reports she had heard from friends and acquaintances, <a href="http://americansrcommunities.com/site/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=55&Itemid=249">Rosewalk Village of Lafayette</a> was the best place to come for rehabilitation. In hindsight, she is totally pleased with her decision.

Leonora had the following things to say about her experience:
"Everyone at Rosewalk Village of Lafayette is so nice. The staff is as helpful as they are friendly. I really loved the food, and was thankful to have a private room to accommodate my visitors. I enjoyed many activities like bingo and ice cream socials, and was glad to be able to attend mass as well. The building is immaculate. There is no sign of the stereotypical nursing home ‘odor’. It truly is an atmosphere that is an enjoyable place to recover."

After about a month of rehabilitation, Leonora was able to return home. Soon, she will be healed completely, and able to continue full speed ahead. Congratulations, Leonora, from your friends at Rosewalk Village of Lafayette!
Image"Rosewalk is the next best thing to home," are the words of Carl May who will be returning home with more strength than he ever thought possible!

Carl, being a previous resident of Rosewalk Village of Lafayette, said he received a warm welcome from the staff when he returned in April of this year. His struggle with limited mobility and extreme pain from previous hip replacements, and a hip fracture brought him back to Rosewalk Village of Lafayette. While here, he enjoyed his private suite and the emphasis on daily activities! The staff was accommodating, and worked with his schedule so that he wouldn’t miss his favorite bingo games.

Carl’s recovery was a long journey; however, faith was his strength, and during his most recent stay he successfully made it through a risky surgery that a team of doctors were hesitant to perform. Afterwards, Carl describes his rehab at Rosewalk Village of Lafayette as "tremendous!" Therapy encouraged him to "do things he didn’t know he could do!" In the beginning, it took two people to transfer Carl now he can independently stand with minimal supervision and is using his walker! Through ankle weight exercises and various other activities he achieved his goals of increasing his leg strength and joint mobility. The team of therapists even prepared a home exercise program so that his progress would continue after he left Rosewalk.

Before he arrived at Rosewalk Village of Lafayette, Carl rarely left his home and if he did it was to go to the doctor. Now, that he has taken time to recuperate, he has no doubts about being able to finally walk again! Doctors want him to limit weight bearing activities, but Carl is looking forward to driving, simply going to the grocery store, and having the freedom to explore the area on day trips with his beloved wife, Phyllis. Rosewalk is extremely proud of the progress he has made! Way to go, Carl!
ImageSallie Brookbank, 77, entered Rosewalk Village of Lafayette due to several falls and a hurt shoulder. While in the hospital she was a bit leery about going to a nursing home to do rehab. However, once she arrived she was "in awe" of Rosewalk. She never imagined being in a private room! In addition, she said everything was "clean, the room was bright, and the people were pleasant and ready to assist you."

During her stay, she made a tradition of enjoying coffee each morning with the friends she made. Physical therapy has allowed her to strengthen her legs. A great milestone was the first day she was able to walk from the therapy gym to her room! She has made tremendous progress from being too weak to sign her name when she arrived to now walking down the halls independently. Once Sallie leaves Rosewalk, she is looking forward to going to lunch with friends and returning to her involvement with her church. After her recovery at Rosewalk Village of Lafayette, Sallie wants to make a commitment to “stay active” and "get back into life."
Image"I selected Rosewalk Village of Lafayette because I was told it is the best place to come for rehabilitation, and I was told right!" ~ William Homrig ~

Bill Homrig moved into a private suite to participate in Moving Forward Rehabilitation at Rosewalk Village of Lafayette after an 8-day hospital stay. Prior to the urinary tract infection that landed him in the hospital, Bill had a recent back surgery that he was still recovering from. Upon admission to Rosewalk Village of Lafayette, Bill was unable to walk without 2 people assisting him, and using a wheelchair most of the time.

Bill spent 7 weeks working with the therapy team at Rosewalk Village of Lafayette, having physical and occupational therapy to improve his strength and endurance. During this time, Bill, his wife Lavaughn and his 3 daughters made the difficult decision to move out of the home they had shared memories in for 54 years. Their home had 4 steps leading into it and no shower on the 1st floor, 2 big problems for someone with a bad back. So, upon his discharge, Bill walked out the front doors of Rosewalk Village of Lafayette into a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom Garden Home with a sun room at Rosewalk Commons. So far the Homrigs have been very pleased with their new home.

Bill and Lavaughn, were also very pleased with the care he received at Rosewalk Village of Lafayette. They were happy he was able to stay in a private room. The nursing staff and his therapists were very receptive to his needs, and took much interest in their upcoming transition to Rosewalk Commons . Thanks to his motivation in therapy, when Bill was discharged he was no longer in need of the wheelchair, but instead was using a rolling walker to walk up to 100 feet at a time! Social Services set him up with in home therapy, and Bill continues to progress today.

Congratulations, Bill, from your friends at Rosewalk Village of Lafayette.
