"I’m never going to leave my home!" That is something we often hear from seniors. Sometimes though, living at home brings with it many challenges. Kate did not like the idea of leaving behind friends and her home of over 30 years, but her family grew concerned about her taking care of the upkeep on a large home. Although Kate is still active and independent, her family was also concerned about her needs in the future. That’s when they contacted Rosegate.
Kate remembers that she was a little nervous about coming to visit and not knowing what to expect. "I didn’t want to feel confined and I wanted my privacy." That’s why Kate and her family looked at our spacious garden homes , which give our residents the independence they want and access to the amenities that allow them live a better quality of life. "When I first visited and saw the flowers blooming in the resident’s gardens and learned that residents were free to do what they wanted, I felt more at ease."
Although leaving home is never easy, Kate moved into her new garden home at Rosegate. She now enjoys many of the activities and trips that are available and has made many new friends. Best of all, she and her family have peace of mind knowing that the staff at Rosegate is always there to help if she needs it.
Peace of mind and quality of life are two things we take seriously. The staff at Rosegate is dedicated to ensuring that our residents enjoy the comforts of home and providing services to enhance the independence they desire. Hello my name is Patricia Herbig. I had to come to the Rosegate campus to have rehab due to a hip replacement. As I was recuperating in rehab my son went to go take a look at the Garden home options, next door. After going to tour the Garden Homes my son said I should make it a point to go over to take a look. I took one of my daughters over to take a tour with me. She felt that I should have her sister come take a look as well, so we took the tour.
After looking this time my daughter and I decided it was time for me to place a deposit for a move in around summer, but after sitting down with one of the trusted advisors here at Rosegate it was clear that the options and move in specials available at the time. I should consider moving sooner. I spoke with my son and I told him that I felt this was all going so fast and in the back of my mind I worried about the sale of my home.
I remember my son saying with the help of my family and the moving help that Rosegate was going to provide, “you can do it, you can do it)! Well, I did it . I went through the house in two weeks and then I moved into to Rosegate. I placed my home on the market the last and it sold in a few months. After loosing my husband it was difficult to move out of my home but "I am so glad I am here"! "I brought all of my own furniture so home came with me". I now feel a complete sense of security being able to bring buttons and all of my own furniture, so home came with me.
When Fran first arrived at Rosegates Auguste’s Cottage, she was weary and kept to herself. Fran preferred to be in her room, often closing the door declining activities or socializing. She had a poor appetite and needed encouragement to eat in the common areas. However, after just a couple of weeks in the nurturing environment of Rosegate’s Auguste’s Cottage, Fran warmed up to our company, and her true personality started to show.
The Fran we know is a lover of life. She greets staff and other residents with a warm smile, pat on the back and a welcoming, “How are ya?” Fran participates in activities every day, often helping the other residents as well. She particularly enjoys bingo twice a week, along with arts & crafts. She often can be found in the gazebo in the courtyard just enjoying the fresh air.
Fran now has a regular group of friends that she sits with during meals and activities. She warmly invites staff to join her for a minute to talk and socialize. She not only loves the meals at Auguste’s Cottage, but praises the food to visitors and other residents and often requests seconds, especially if it is something sweet. Her daughters visit frequently and she often will spend nights and holidays with them. Fran accepts invites, too, and greatly enjoys community outings. She recently gushed about how exciting the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum was and was very pleased to see A.J. Foyt’s cars. She is a pleasure to be around and is a woman who is enjoys life.
Ms. Helen Rich came to Rosegate after a weeklong stay at Methodist Hospital. When she arrived at Rosegate, Helen was able to walk about 150 feet with minimal assistance and needed help with her medications. Her family was also concerned with her memory. Occupational therapy worked with her to help with her dressing and cooking skills. Speech therapy taught her techniques to help improve her memory.
After just days, Ms. Rich was walking over 600 feet independently and was able to move into a Garden Home next door at Rosegate Commons. She joined New Energy Wellness to maintain all the progress that she made. Ms. Rich comes over quite frequently to visit friends she made here. Great job Helen, we are so proud of you!
Finding the good life – close to home!
Living the good life is a phrase heard when thinking of far off places, but one local family found "the good life" close to home. Jo was like many seniors today: active, on the go, and wanting to stay that way. Jo and her husband Louis enjoyed their home in Pennsylvania, but after some changes in their lives, living at home was not what it used to be.
When her husband was having some health issues, living in their home was not as easy as it once was. "When Louis started to get ill, I knew we needed to do something. I wanted my independence, but I also knew I could not do this alone." Jo has family that lives in Greenwood, Indiana, and they started looking for options here when they found Rosegate. "My daughter in law said "Mom, I found a place you have to come and see." Jo fell in love with the garden homes at Rosegate on her first visit.
Though there is always some trepidation when making a move, the reasons Jo chose Rosegate were clear. "I wanted my independence and I wanted to be free to do the things I wanted to. But I also knew that with my husband’s health, I could not do this on my own." Moving into their Garden Home in 2004, Jo and Louis found that you could have the best of both worlds. Never having to worry about maintenance gave her more time to be with Louis. With transportation available to all of our residents, getting to doctors appointments and running errands were simple. Jo found support and friendship from her new neighbors and friends. "The staff at Rosegate have been a godsend to me and are always available for anything I need."
Though much has happened over the last four years, Jo cannot think of any place but Rosegate as her home. At 91, still vibrant and full of life, Jo remains an active part of the community. "You just can’t sit around and watch the world go by…you have to be a part of it! My days are filled with wonderful opportunities!" Whether going on trips or having dinner with her friends in our restaurant, Rosegate gave her the freedom for her independent spirit and a staff to help her when she needed it. "This is my life…this is my home…and I never want to leave here!"
Life is about choices – and when the time came for my mom, Beverly June, to go into assisted living, the four of us (my two sisters, my mom, and I) made a good choice! We were all nervous and concerned about what this change in lifestyle would mean for Mom – but none of us more than Mom – who had been fiercely independent and managed on her own quite nicely.
From the moment we arrived at Rosegate, everyone we met with was so kind, helpful and considerate. Mom and we three "girls" were quite pleased, and relieved any trepidation we might have had.
When Mom moved into Rosegate we all had to adjust to a "new normal," but within days, she began telling us "everyone on staff in the dining room knows my name!" She fell in love with the staff and now refers to them with much affection and tenderness in her voice. She loves their helpfulness and willingness to assist her whenever she needs them. She told me the other day that she never wants to leave Rosegate – she just loves it there! Yes, life is about the choices we make – I’m so thankful that we chose Rosegate for our mom! Bob and I just love our Garden Home! When we started looking at options, we had to find the right place that made us feel comfortable and right at home. Living in our own home for so many years, it seemed like it would be impossible to find something that offered the comforts we were used to, and the amenities we wanted. But, when we saw how roomy and bright your garden homes were, it was an easy choice! With no worries about taking care of our home, Bob and I can enjoy doing all the things we love. Looking back, we wonder why we waited so long! With the wonderful bus trips, social activities, good neighbors and fellowship, it’s hard for us to imagine anything else as "home."
